  • What are the advantages of the City's Recycling Bags?
The City’s new recycling bags provide a number of advantages for residents. Bags… Can be stored easily, taking up little room in your home or apartment. With drawstrings, reduce litter by preventing paper and other items from being blown out of the recycling container. Are lighter than recycling bins, and so are more easy to use. Allow you to add more recycling capacity any time you need it.
  • Why is recycling important?
Recycling benefits Boston both economically and environmentally. Economically For every ton of bottles, cans, and plastic containers that residents recycle (rather than throw away in the trash), the City saves $80. That means that a 1% change in the City’s recycling rate would save more than $200,000 each year. Your efforts in the Recycle More program help the City reduce its costs, preserve services, and make important investments in our neighborhoods. Environmentally Recycling helps conserve the planet’s natural resources, including oil, water, trees, air, and minerals.
  • What if I have a quality issue with a bag?

PROGRAM BACKGROUND

On February 4, 2014, the Hanson Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to approve a Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) program and authorize Town Administrator Ronald San Angelo to sign the contract between the town and WasteZero.

Beginning July 1, 2014, residents must place all their trash in the new Hanson official orange trash bags before disposing at the transfer station.  Trash not placed in the designated orange bags will not be accepted.

The Hanson orange trash bags are conveniently available in the following sizes and quantities at retail outlets throughout Hanson:

  • Small, 15-gallon PAYT bags are sold in packages of eight.

  • Large, 30-gallon PAYT bags are sold in packages of five.

The PAYT bags are for solid waste only and not recyclable items.  The PAYT program allows the Town of Hanson to increase recycling and reduce the amount of trash generated, resulting in savings for Hanson.  These savings may allow the town to allocate funds to higher priority services.  PAYT also creates a far more fair and efficient trash collection program for everyone.  Residents who recycle will no longer subsidize trash collection for their neighbors who may not recycle.

Remember, by recycling more, you’ll produce less trash, which means you’ll use fewer trash bags.  The PAYT program lets you take control of your waste disposal costs!  Also, when residents throw away less and recycle more, the environment is better preserved as landfills last longer, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, millions of BTUs of energy are saved, and natural resources last longer.
