WHAT TO RECYCLE?

Recycling will reduce your cost, since there is no additional fee to recycle the items listed below. The more you recycle, the less trash you have to put into the official Town of Harvard SMART bags, and the more money you’ll save and you save the Town.

Please note: Recyclables should not be placed in the official Town of Harvard trash bags, and they should not be placed in the waste compactors.

The chart below shows major categories of what can and cannot be recycled. Remember, the more you recycle, the more you save!

PLEASE RECYCLE:

Plastic Bottles, Jars, Jugs, & Tubs

  • Plastic Bottles and Containers (clean & empty containers with lids and caps ON)

  • Plastic Soda, Water & Drink Bottles

  • Plastic Food & Household Bottles/Jars
    (screw top bottles and jars, ex. ketchup, mayonnaise, detergent, shampoo)

  • Plastic Tubs & Lids
    (ex. yogurt, margarine, cottage cheese)

  • Plastic Produce, Deli & Bakery Containers, Cups, Trays
    (take-out containers, berries/produce containers)

Please do not include:

  • No plastic bags or plastic utensils

 

  • No Polystyrene (Styrofoam)

 

  • No bulky plastics (buckets, crates) or toys

Glass Bottles & Jars

  • Glass bottles and jars (empty containers with caps OFF)

  • All glass colors

 

Please do not include:

  • No windows or mirrors

 

  • No light bulbs (fluorescent bulbs should be disposed of properly)

  • No dishes, ceramics, or Pyrex

  • No containers that contained hazardous waste

Metal Cans & Aluminum

  • Metal cans and Aluminum (empty containers)

  • Steel, tin, and aluminum cans

 

  • Clean aluminum pie plates, trays, and foil (please bunch)

Please do not include:

  • No chains, wires or hangers

  • No containers that contained hazardous waste

  • Place large metal items in the scrap metal container

Paper & Cardboard

  • Magazines & Catalogs

  • All newspapers & inserts

  • Paperboard (cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, etc.) & paper bags

  • Cardboard – please flatten

  • Pizza boxes – greasy ok, remove food

  • Office paper, Junk mail (Staples, paperclips, spirals, & plastic envelope windows are OK)

  • Brown bags

  • Phone books

Please do not include:

  • No recyclables with food waste

 

  • No napkins, paper towels, tissues

  • No frozen food boxes

  • No gift wrap

  • No books (please use book bin)

  • No  foam padding

Items which require special handling:

  • Automotive and similar lead acid batteries are recycled at the “attendant’s shack”

  • Books and Textiles are recycled at the drop off bin

  • Electronics are recycled at the “attendant’s shack”

  • Fluorescent bulbs are recycled at the “attendant’s shack”

  • Mercury containing items are recycled at the “attendant’s shack”

  • Scrap metal is recycled in the “scrap metal pile”

The Transfer Station also accepts the following materials for recycling:

  • Books

  • Scrap Metal

  • Textiles
